1) Verbal analogy
2) Verbal ability

What is verbal analogy

Verbal analogy and verbal ability are parts of almost all major competitive examinations. The word ‘analogy’ is derived from the Greek ana, which means ‘relation’ and logus, which means ‘knowledge’.
The word analogy is a noun meaning a similar feature, condition, state, etc. shared by two things that are compared. It is also the process of reasoning based on similar features of two different things, items, people, animals, etc. in competitive examinations the verbal analogy section enables the examiner to evaluate the candidate’s reasoning skills as it test his/her ability to compare and establish proper relationships among the given items on the basis of certain commonalities.

Questions on analogy cover a wide range of relationships that we observe in our daily life. Some common types of relationships that candidates are frequently required to identify are those between state and capital, country and currency, male and female, parent and offspring etc.

How to crack ANALOGIES

You can try to understand the relationship between the word of the key pairs in the following ways.
ü  Narrowing down your choices
ü  Framing a sentence
ü  Keeping the different meaning of the words in mind
ü  Looking out for clues meant to mislead
ü  Looking for relationships
ü  Looking for synonyms of antonyms
ü  Looking for some common characteristics

Examples:

Ornithology: Birds::Botany: Plants
Explanations: Ornithology is the study of birds whereas botany is a study of plants
Prism: Glass::Wall: brick
Explanation: Prism is made of glass and a wall is made of bricks

Verbal Ability

Like verbal analogy, verbal ability is an important component of any competitive examination. There are more than forty different ways of framing questions to test the verbal ability of students. To understand this topic better, it can be divided in to four broad categories

  1. Vocabulary based questions
  2. Grammar based questions
  3. Verbal reasoning questions
  4. Writing style questions

In this article, we will talk about vocabulary based questions. There are the most common type of verbal ability questions and are probably simplest to understand and answer. In this type, the questions are based on the meaning of the given terms or its synonyms, its antonyms or idiomatic usages. This primarily aims at testing the candidate’s vocabulary.

Some nouns are plural and some nouns are always singular.

Examples of Singular Noun

this is a Book
this is a banana
this is a cow

Examples of Plural Nouns

these are books
those are bananas
these are cows
those are horses

Now we have brief idea about Singular Noun V/s Plural Nouns.
But some nouns are always singular in number so those nouns takes singular verb. lets see below example.

the scenery of girnar is beautiful          the scenery of girnar is beautiful.

furniture, fruit, rice, soap, hair, luggage, stationary these are the nouns who uses always singular verb.

in the same way some nouns are always plural, so they takes plural verb. for example

usage of articles A, An, and The. | English Grammar for competitive exams

An article is a word or prefix or suffix that is used with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. in english there are two main articles which is given below.

indefinite articles
A, An
definite article
The

what is the difference between articles and how to use it

lets say if you want to elaborate about anything which is general or Any normal object then you should use indefinite articles or A, An. but if you want to mention something which is specific or static thing then you should use Definite article "The".

For an example,

Purvi wants to study English grammar from a website.

well website is not a specific or any kind of static thing or object to be mentioned as a "the" articles but lets say if purvi has a static object.

Purvi wants to study English grammar from the jobgyaan.com

cool, B| now you got an idea about where to use articles but lets go in to deep for more specific idea about to usage of articles in english grammar for government exams or competitive exams preparations.

How to use Articles in English grammar

A, is used on consonant sound,
on before singular countable nouns.

An, is used on Vowel Sound,
on before singular countable nouns.

see these examples
A
A book
A shell
A shirt
A cat

An
An elephant
An umbrella
An article

Tricks to remember

Articles are all about sounds not letters, one does not simply to consider letters while putting articles before noun. let's say A,E,I,O,U letters sounds like we can put "An" before any noun spell which can starts from it?
like :
I am writing this article for a hour
is it right?
the answer is "No" cause "Hour" sounds like "Our" not "Hovur" understand? like "European" sounds like "yuropean" not like "eyuropean" so the tricks is consider noun's sound not its spelling. one can not put "An" everytime before "AEIOU"

Another trick is when you using shortcuts of any words then use "An" like
i am posting status on a facebook
i am posting status on an FB
